Join your host Penny and fellow writers for a 4-night retreat designed especially for writers who need a break from paid work and unpaid responsibilities. The intimate retreat is held in a small group of rural cottages in Cornwall, set in beautiful gardens just a mile from the coast.

This retreat is for writers who need the time and headspace to write, free from other responsibilities. All meals will be provided, as well as endless cups of tea and coffee and plenty of biscuits.

You won’t be lifting a finger while you are on the retreat, leaving you the space to think, write, read, have conversations and rest.

There will be plenty of opportunity to:

  • Get support and feedback from other writers

  • Have deep conversations and time to think, away from everyday pressures

  • Work at your own pace, alone or with others

  • Have a one to one coaching session with Penny (worth £350)

  • Walk in the surrounding countryside and nearby South West Coastal Path

  • Gather by the fire (both indoors and out)

  • Rest, sleep in and relax

  • Curl up with a book

  • Have meals cooked for you. You won’t have to lift a finger.

  • Be cared for by someone else

What previous years guests say about the retreat…….

It was magical being held in community with other women, all of whom were working on interesting projects, and I felt nourished and well-rested for the first time in months (years?!). Thank you Penny - sign me up for the next one!

Can we do it every year?!

Who is the retreat for?

Whether you are working a novel, a book proposal or a non-fiction manuscript, essay or poetry collection, this retreat is for you. There are no structured ‘classes’ in this retreat, so it is better suited to experienced writers. If you have any questions about suitability, please contact Penny.

The location

The three luxury cottages provide both privacy and plenty of shared spaces to come together. They are nestled closely together in secluded gardens, along with a Barn which provides additional communal writing space, as well as a place to gather.

The recently renovated 18th Century cottages are filled with classic mid-century and Scandinavian design and the farm has been featured in many interiors magazines. There are also plenty of books! All retreat attendees will have a private room. Some rooms have a private en-suite. Wifi is available in all the cottages.

Smugglers Lane – A private cottage for one person, with a large living area with sofas, a wood burner and a table to write. This cottage has a private bathroom and a kitchenette.

Carter’s Croft – a two-bedroom cottage for two people, containing a double and a twin room, with one bathroom, a kitchen and a living area, with space to write, cosy sofas and a wood burning stove.

The Old Granary – a 3-bedroom cottage for two people plus your host Penny. It has a double room with ensuite and a twin room (Plus Penny’s room!). This cottage has two bathrooms, a large open plan living and dining area, with plenty of space to write and a large table big enough for all retreat attendees to come together.

The Barn – a gorgeous converted barn which has a library, a large table for writing and meals, an open fireplace and armchairs for gathering together.

Middle Colenso Farm is located in a rural setting just 15-minute drive from Penzance making it perfect to travel to by train (more time to write, think and relax!). Prussia Cove and the South West Coastal Path is just a mile away. Penny will be available to collect from the station (arranged in advance) and taxis are also available. For those who wish to drive, there is plenty of parking.

Can I bring my dog?

For a small fee, Middle Colenso Farm allow well behaved dogs in the cottages. We have had a dog on every retreat so far! Please note that I do need to confirm with the other attendees that there are no allergies.

Thank you Penny for all your hard work and generous hosting, it felt both stretchy and containing committing to this process and I’m so grateful for all the chats, laughs and wisdom shared over the four days.
